About the Society
The Czech Society for Environmental Law brings together primarily lawyers, as well as professionals from other disciplines, who share an interest in understanding and developing environmental law. The Society was established as a civic association by a preparatory committee in the summer of 2000, at the initiative of a group of lawyers from various fields of practice. Its inaugural General Meeting, at which the statutes were adopted and the Society’s governing bodies and officers elected, took place on 6 March 2001 in the main hall of the Presidium of the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague.
The Czech Society for Environmental Law aims to promote knowledge, development and dissemination of environmental law. It seeks to contribute actively to the drafting of new legislation and to organise educational and information events to raise public awareness of environmental law. The Society aims to provide a forum for reflection and discussion and to facilitate research, study, public education and teaching. It also seeks to be active internationally, particularly in international and European Community environmental law, by establishing and maintaining bilateral and multilateral links abroad. Cooperation has already begun with the European Environmental Law Association and the International Centre for Comparative Environmental Law. Plans are under way to establish close cooperation with other associations around the world. The Society also cooperates with the Czech Society for Construction Law.
The membership of the Czech Society for Environmental Law comprises both active and contributing members and is open to individuals and legal entities alike. The Society’s supreme governing body is the General Meeting of members, which is convened at least once a year. Between General Meetings, the Society is managed by the Board, elected by the General Meeting for a three-year term. A three-member Supervisory Commission oversees the proper running of the Society.
